Five Possible Ways Chelsea Could Lineup After Signing Lukaku

Chelsea announced the record signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for a fee believed to be £97.5m. His addition adds firepower to the blunt Chelsea attack that creates numerous chances but somehow fail to score from them. After the announcement, we take a look at how Chelsea could line up after securing the services of Lukaku.

Taking a cue from Tuchel’s formations since his first match against Wolves through to the Super cup match, Chelsea’s main formation will be the 3-4-3 formation. Just as in other matches, this formation may change to a 3-5-2 to counter opposition tactical changes.

Let’s take a look at the predicted lineups and formations.

First predicted line up

The back five above needs no further explanation or reasoning into choice. Silva may be a bit part player this season considering his age and the number of matches they have to play this season. Andreas Christensen stepped up superbly whenever needed and he could lay claim to this position this season.

With a lot of promise at the tail end of last season, Kai Havertz can display astonishing performances this season. Many agree his performances were not up there last season because of the change of environment, his young age and Covid-19. This season could the season that Chelsea fans see the real Havertz. The choice of Werner over Mount is a straight one as Werner thrives more playing with a target man.

Second possible line up

The only change in the above formation is Silva and Mount coming in. Mason Mount’s versatility offers Tuchel the opportunity to tweak his tactics in matches as this may come handy in matches against very tactical sides. Silva with his assured and composed defending brings a lot of experience and composure to the Chelsea defence which is very vital.

third line up

Due to Lukaku’s aerial prowess, Tuchel may decide to use Azpilicueta and James in a match to provide him with several crosses. This is the same reason why Mount gets the choice over Havertz.

The 3-5-2

This formation suits Timo Werner a lot. Before Lukaku came in, he confessed that he does well playing with big strikers who serve as target men. As mentioned earlier, Mount’s versatility makes him move into midfield to create a midfield 3 with Jorginho at the base.

Last predicted line up

The changes here are Havertz and Azpilicueta. Havertz and Lukaku upfront means Chelsea has two players good in there air. This attack means more deliveries into the box hence the presence of Azpilicueta who does that more often in games.

To explain some absentees, Ziyech injury is the reason why he has not been considered in coming up with the line ups. With everyone fit, Pulisic is not expected to be a starter which is an open secret since Tuchel got the job.
